POST /public/v1/quotes- Safe retries
operation_key
fieldtask_create_quote lets an AI client connected to FieldTask through MCP create one draft quote for an existing customer, priced from your catalog. It accepts the same inputs as POST /public/v1/quotes and runs the same checks, with one difference: through MCP, a quote can include a discount.
A draft quote is only saved in FieldTask. The tool never sends the quote to the customer, never marks it accepted, and never turns it into a job or an invoice. No FieldTask tool does those things; someone in your organization sends the quote from FieldTask when it's ready.
You describe the quote in plain language. The client looks up the customer, location and catalog items with FieldTask's other tools, then calls this tool with their IDs.
This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use.
Before you start
- MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
- Quotes available for your organization. FieldTask makes Quotes available organization by organization, your organization must not have switched Quotes off, and its currency must use no more than two decimal places.
- An organization owner or admin to approve the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. The tool then acts on their behalf within the approved permissions.
- An AI client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. You add FieldTask's MCP server address to the client; the address is shown with your connection settings. MCP uses its own sign-in: REST API tokens and client secrets don't work here.
- Products and services in your catalog. Every line item comes from the catalog, at a catalog price.
If fieldtask_create_quote isn't in your client's tool list after connecting, Quotes isn't available for your organization, MCP quote creation isn't enabled by FieldTask, or the connection lacks one of the permissions below.
Permissions
| Permission | Dependency in the permission map |
|---|---|
customers:read | No dependencies |
products:read | No dependencies |
quotes:create | Depends on customers:read, products:read, quotes:read |
quotes:read | Depends on customers:read |
| When | Additional permission | Including its dependencies |
|---|---|---|
location_id is not null | customer_locations:read | customer_locations:read, customers:read |
To resolve names into IDs, the client also needs read access for the lookup tools it uses: fieldtask_list_customers (customers:read), fieldtask_list_customer_locations (customer_locations:read) and fieldtask_list_products (products:read).
Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools so it discovers the new inputs and tools.
How the client finds IDs
Every reference argument is an ID, but you never need to supply one:
| Argument | Where the ID comes from |
|---|---|
customer_id | fieldtask_list_customers, matched by name or contact details, or data.id from fieldtask_create_customer |
location_id | fieldtask_list_customer_locations for the chosen customer, matched by name or address, or data.id from fieldtask_create_customer_location |
items[].product_id, items[].price_id | fieldtask_list_products. A product with several prices needs price_id. |
FieldTask's tool descriptions also tell the client to ask you to choose when a name matches more than one record, and to ask for the site address and create a location when the customer has none, unless you choose to go without one. These are instructions to the client, not guarantees. Check what was created, as described below.
A location matters if your organization synchronizes quotes with a connected CRM: without one, the initial synchronization attempt is reported as blocked. See Local creation and external synchronization.
Example prompts and their effects
The client's wording and the exact sequence of lookups vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.
| You ask | Tools the client typically calls | What you can verify |
|---|---|---|
| "Draft a quote for Example Property Services at their Main office: two condenser fan motor replacements, 8.25% tax, 10% off." | fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_list_customer_locations, fieldtask_list_products, fieldtask_create_quote | A new draft quote for that customer appears in FieldTask with the returned data.quote_number. The result's data.status is draft, data.discount_amount is 37.00 and data.total is 360.47. |
| "Create that quote and send it to them." | The same lookups, then fieldtask_create_quote | A draft quote is created and nothing is sent: data.status is draft and data.selected_revision.sent_at is null. Send it from FieldTask. |
| "Quote a rooftop inspection for Example Property Services" when the product has several prices | fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_list_products | The client asks which price to use. If it calls the tool without choosing, the call fails with validation_failed and no quote is created. |
| "Did that quote reach our CRM?" | fieldtask_get_operation | The result shows local_status: "committed" and the integration.status of the initial synchronization attempt. That status doesn't cover later synchronization, so check the connected CRM itself to be sure. |
If something looks wrong, open the quote in FieldTask, or ask the client to fetch it with fieldtask_get_quote using the returned data.id.
Arguments
These are the arguments for the first example above, as the client sends them after looking up the customer, location and product:
{
"title": "Condenser fan motor replacement",
"customer_id": "11111111-1111-4111-8111-111111111111",

"operation_key": "3c9e1a52-7d4b-4f0e-b6a8-2f5d9c0e7b41"
}
The arguments follow the same rules as the REST request body: 1–100 catalog items with positive quantities, decimal strings for amounts, and defaults from your organization's quote settings for the issue date, expiry, tax rate and terms. See the REST field guide. The only MCP-specific argument is operation_key.
Discounts
Through MCP, discount can be a percentage of the subtotal or a fixed amount, because the tool acts for the owner or admin who approved the connection. REST connections can't apply a discount. The discount is never more than the subtotal, and tax is calculated after it. See Totals, taxes and discounts.

The issue date and expiry here are the defaults: the current date in UTC, and the creation time plus your organization's default validity period. terms is your organization's default quote terms, if it has any. Amounts are decimal strings; 8.25% of 333.00 is 27.4725, which rounds to 27.47.
Without customer_locations:read, the result has no location summary. The output schema your client discovers is calculated for its own connection.

Retries and operation_key
operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:
- The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with
replayed: true. No second quote is created. - The same key with different arguments fails with
idempotency_key_reused. - A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different quote, even after seven days.
- Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it. A key from one connection means nothing on another.
- The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.
If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. If a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to check before trying again, for example "list the draft quotes for Example Property Services" or "check the operation for that quote", rather than asking it to create the quote again. See Idempotency and recovery.
Errors
When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent:
{
"error": {
"code": "response_too_large",
"message": "The expanded create response is too large for MCP.",
"fix": "Reduce the number of items or use the REST API. No resource was created; do not retry the same request unchanged.",
"docs_url": "https://api.fieldtask.example/public/docs/",
"request_id": "99999999-9999-4999-8999-999999999996"
}
}
Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds.
error.code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
missing_permission | The connection lacks a permission for this call or one of its arguments, such as customer_locations:read for location_id. | Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools. |
validation_failed | An argument is missing, unknown or invalid; the customer, location or a product isn't eligible; a price choice matches no option or more than one; or a quantity is zero. | Check the arguments against the field guide, and choose a specific price for products with several. The error doesn't name the field. |
api_access_not_enabled | API and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization. | Request access in Settings → API connections. |
operation_forbidden | The connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay would return a customer or location it can no longer read. | Check the connection's permissions, then retry with the same operation_key. |
idempotency_key_reused | The operation_key was used with different arguments. | Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different quote. |
operation_in_progress | A call with the same key is still running. | Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key. |
idempotency_window_expired | The key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed. | Check whether the quote exists before creating anything new. |
rate_limit_exceeded, daily_quota_exceeded | A per-minute, concurrency or daily limit was reached. | Wait retry_after seconds. |
response_too_large | The draft quote, expanded with all its items, descriptions and terms, is too large to return through MCP. Nothing was created. | Send fewer items or shorter terms, or create the quote through REST. Don't retry the same call unchanged. |
resource_gone | A replay found that the quote created with this key has since been deleted. | Don't create it again automatically. Check in FieldTask whether it was removed on purpose. |
resource_not_found | The tool, or Quotes for your organization, isn't available. | Refresh the client's tools; contact FieldTask if you expected it. |
temporarily_unavailable | FieldTask couldn't complete the call. The quote may or may not exist. | Retry with the same operation_key, or check for the quote first. |
Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.
Recovery
Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs quotes:read and customers:read, and works only on the same connection.
The operation reports local_status: "committed" and an integration.status for follow-up work, such as synchronization with a connected CRM. For quotes, that status covers only the initial synchronization attempt: FieldTask can still send the quote to the connected CRM after an attempt reported as blocked. The quote exists regardless of that status, and the follow-up never sends it to the customer. See Local creation and external synchronization for what each status means for a quote.
Operation results are kept for seven days.
Tool annotations
| Annotation | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
destructiveHint | false | Never modifies or removes existing records. |
idempotentHint | false | Each new call can create another record. Reuse operation_key to retry safely. |
openWorldHint | true | Can start work outside FieldTask, such as external synchronization. |
readOnlyHint | false | Changes data in FieldTask. |
