fieldtask_create_member_invitation lets an AI client invite one person, by email address, to join your organization as an ordinary member. It runs the same checks as POST /public/v1/member-invitations.

The tool creates a pending invitation, not a member. FieldTask then emails the person a link as separate follow-up work. They join only when they open the link, sign in with the invited address and accept. The tool can't invite admins, resend an invitation or accept one.

Preview

This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use.

Before you start

  • MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
  • An owner or admin approves the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. Invitations are sent on their behalf.
  • Invitation creation enabled by FieldTask. If the tool isn't in your client's tool list after connecting, invitation creation isn't enabled, the connection lacks a permission below, or the person who approved it isn't currently an owner or admin.
  • A plan that allows inviting members. Solo plans can't invite members, and some plans limit how many invitations an organization can create.

Permissions

Permissions the connection must hold for the tool to appear and run.
PermissionDependency in the permission map
members:inviteDepends on members:read
members:readNo dependencies

To check email delivery afterwards with fieldtask_get_operation, the connection needs the same two permissions.

Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools.

Invitation authority

Through MCP, the invitation authority is the owner or admin who approved the connection, and it's checked on every call:

  • The person must still be the organization's owner or an active admin, with an active FieldTask account. If they lose that role, the invitation tools disappear from the client's tool list and calls return operation_forbidden.
  • Each invitation stays tied to the person who approved the connection when it was created. It can be emailed and accepted only while that person is still eligible, their approval of the connection is still in place, and the connection still has members:read and members:invite.

For REST connections the rule is different: invitations are sent on behalf of the connection's sponsor. See Invitation authority (REST).

Example prompts and their effects

The client's wording and the exact sequence of tool calls vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.

You askTools the client typically callsWhat you can verify
"Invite jordan.example@example.com to join our team."fieldtask_create_member_invitationThe result's data.status is pending, data.role is member and data.id is the invitation ID. The invitation appears in fieldtask_list_member_invitations.
"Did the invitation email go out?"fieldtask_get_operation with the operation_id from the createThe email target's status: pending, succeeded, failed, blocked or outcome_unknown. See Email delivery.
"Has Jordan accepted yet?"fieldtask_get_member_invitationdata.status changes from pending to accepted. Jordan then appears in fieldtask_list_members.
"Invite Jordan as an admin."None, or fieldtask_create_member_invitation with role: "member"No admin invitation can be created. Any invitation created has role: "member".
"Invite jordan.example@example.com again." while the first invitation is pendingfieldtask_create_member_invitationThe call fails with validation_failed. No second invitation or email is created.

Recipients aren't looked up: the client passes the address you give it, exactly as written. Check the address in the result before relying on the invitation.

Arguments

These are the arguments for the first example above:

fieldtask_create_member_invitation arguments
{
"email": "jordan.example@example.com",
"operation_key": "8f1b6c1e-2f43-4d0a-9a51-3c7e2d9b4a20"
}
ArgumentRequiredWhat to send
emailYesOne email address, up to 256 characters, with no spaces at either end. Comparisons with other invitations are case-insensitive.
roleNoOnly member. Defaults to member.
operation_keyNoA key that makes the call safe to retry. See Retries and operation_key.

If the address already has a pending invitation in your organization, including one created in the FieldTask app, the call fails with validation_failed. FieldTask doesn't check whether the address belongs to an existing account or member, and the result never reveals it. See the REST field guide for all the rules.

  • role"member"optionaldefault "member"

Additional properties are rejected.

Result

A successful call returns the invitation as structuredContent, with the operation details alongside it. The same JSON is also sent as text content for clients that only read text.

  • data.expires_at is seven days after data.created_at. After that the link stops working and status becomes expired.
  • integration reports the invitation email. Right after the create it's pending. A pending or succeeded email doesn't mean the person has joined.
  • The acceptance link is never returned. It's only in the email.

Retries and operation_key

operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:

  • The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with replayed: true. No second invitation or email is created. The replayed data is the original snapshot, so read the invitation for its current status.
  • The same key with different arguments fails with idempotency_key_reused. A different letter case in email counts as different arguments.
  • A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different invitation, even after seven days.
  • Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it. A key from one connection means nothing on another.
  • The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.

If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. If a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to check first, for example "list pending invitations", rather than asking it to invite the person again. A second invitation for an address that already has a pending one is rejected anyway.

If the email doesn't arrive

  1. Ask the client to check the operation with fieldtask_get_operation.
  2. If the email target is pending, wait; FieldTask retries temporary mail-server problems itself.
  3. If it's succeeded or outcome_unknown, ask the recipient to check spam or junk folders, and check the address on the invitation for typos.
  4. If it's failed with invalid_upstream_data, the address was probably wrong. Invite the correct address.

Don't ask the client to invite the same address again straight away: the call fails while the first invitation is pending, and the tool can't resend. To start over for the same address, have an owner or admin cancel the pending invitation in the FieldTask app, or wait until it expires. See Accepting an invitation for what the recipient needs.

Errors

When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent:

Tool error result (structuredContent)
{
"error": {
"code": "validation_failed",
"message": "The request contains invalid fields.",
"fix": "Check the documented request fields.",
"docs_url": "https://api.fieldtask.example/public/docs/",
"request_id": "99999999-9999-4999-8999-999999999998"
}
}

Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds.

error.codeMeaningWhat to do
missing_permissionThe connection lacks members:read or members:invite.Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools.
operation_forbiddenThe person who approved the connection is no longer an owner or admin, the connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay was refused.Have a current owner or admin connect the client, or restore the approver's role. Then retry with the same operation_key.
validation_failedemail is missing or invalid, role isn't member, the address already has a pending invitation, or the plan doesn't allow more invitations.Check the address. List invitations before trying again. The error doesn't name the rule.
api_access_not_enabledAPI and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization.Request access in Settings → API connections.
idempotency_key_reusedThe operation_key was used with different arguments.Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different invitation.
operation_in_progressA call with the same key is still running.Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key.
idempotency_window_expiredThe key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed.List invitations before creating anything new.
resource_goneA replay found that the invitation was removed, for example cancelled in the FieldTask app.Don't invite again automatically; check whether it was cancelled on purpose.
rate_limit_exceededA per-minute or concurrency limit, or an hourly or daily invitation limit for the organization, connection or recipient address, was reached.Wait retry_after seconds, then retry with the same key.
daily_quota_exceededThe daily create allowance was reached.Wait retry_after seconds.
resource_not_foundThe tool or a feature it needs isn't available.Refresh the client's tools; contact FieldTask if you expected it.
temporarily_unavailableFieldTask couldn't complete the call. The invitation may or may not exist.Retry with the same operation_key, or list invitations first.

Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.

Recovery

Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs members:read and members:invite, and works only on the same connection for the same approving person.

The operation reports local_status: "committed" and an integration.status for the invitation email. The invitation exists regardless of that status. Operation results are kept for seven days, the same as the invitation's lifetime.

Tool annotations

Tool annotations your client receives.
AnnotationValueMeaning
destructiveHintfalseNever modifies or removes existing records.
idempotentHintfalseEach new call can create another record. Reuse operation_key to retry safely.
openWorldHinttrueCan start work outside FieldTask, such as external synchronization.
readOnlyHintfalseChanges data in FieldTask.
