fieldtask_create_customer_location lets an AI client connected to FieldTask through MCP add one service location to an existing customer: a named address where your team works, with an optional position and geofence radius. It accepts the same inputs as POST /public/v1/customers/{customer_id}/locations, with the customer passed as the customer_id argument, and runs the same checks.

You describe the customer and the address in plain language. The client finds the customer with fieldtask_list_customers, then calls this tool with its ID. The tool only creates; it never updates or merges with an existing location.

Preview

This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use. Looking up coordinates from the address works only where FieldTask has enabled it.

Before you start

  • MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
  • An organization owner or admin to approve the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. The tool then acts on their behalf within the approved permissions.
  • An AI client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. You add FieldTask's MCP server address to the client; the address is shown with your connection settings. MCP uses its own sign-in: REST API tokens and client secrets don't work here.
  • Location creation enabled through MCP. If fieldtask_create_customer_location isn't in your client's tool list after connecting, MCP location creation isn't enabled by FieldTask, or the connection lacks customer_locations:create.
  • An existing customer. Archived customers can be used; deleted customers can't. To add a new customer first, the client uses fieldtask_create_customer.

Permissions

Permissions the connection must hold for the tool to appear and run.
PermissionDependency in the permission map
customer_locations:createDepends on customer_locations:read, customers:read
customer_locations:readDepends on customers:read
customers:readNo dependencies

No argument needs an additional permission. The same permissions also let the client find the customer with fieldtask_list_customers and check its existing locations with fieldtask_list_customer_locations.

Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools so it discovers the new inputs and tools.

How the client fills in the arguments

ArgumentWhere it comes from
customer_idfieldtask_list_customers, matched by name or contact details, or data.id from fieldtask_create_customer. You never need to supply an ID.
name, addressWhat you say. Both are required.
radiusWhat you say, in metres. FieldTask instructs the client to use 100 metres when you don't give one, which is also the default when it's left out.
latitude, longitudeOnly coordinates you give. FieldTask instructs the client never to invent coordinates. When they're left out, FieldTask looks up the address after the location is saved.

When you ask for a job at a customer that has no saved location, FieldTask instructs the client to ask you for the job site address, create the location with this tool and use its ID for the job, unless you choose to go without a location. See fieldtask_create_job.

Example prompts and their effects

The client's wording and the exact sequence of lookups vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.

You askTools the client typically callsWhat you can verify
"Add a location called Main office at 100 Example Avenue, Springfield for Example Property Services."fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_list_customer_locations, fieldtask_create_customer_locationThe location appears on the customer with a 100 m radius. If it's the customer's first, the result has data.is_default: true and the customer's primary address is set to that address when it had none. data.latitude is null and, where FieldTask looks up addresses, integration.status is pending.
"Add their North warehouse at 200 Example Road, Springfield, with a 250 metre geofence."fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_create_customer_locationA second location with radius: 250 and is_default: false. The default location doesn't change.
"Add Main office at 100 Example Avenue, Springfield, latitude 39.799, longitude -89.644."fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_create_customer_locationThe result already has those coordinates, and no address lookup is queued.
"Has FieldTask found the coordinates for the Main office yet?"fieldtask_get_operation or fieldtask_get_customer_locationOnce the lookup has succeeded, the location's latitude and longitude are no longer null.

If something looks wrong, open the customer's locations in FieldTask, or ask the client to fetch the location with fieldtask_get_customer_location using the returned data.id.

Arguments

These are the arguments for the first example above, as the client sends them after looking up the customer:

fieldtask_create_customer_location arguments

}

The arguments follow the same rules as the REST request body. In short:

  • name and address are each at most 256 characters, with no line breaks or other control characters.
  • latitude and longitude go together or not at all.
  • radius is a whole number of metres from 1 upwards, whatever distance unit your organization displays.
  • There's no external_reference for locations.

See the REST field guide for details. The MCP-specific arguments are customer_id, which REST takes from the URL, and operation_key.

    Pattern^[^\u0000-\u001F-Ÿ\uD800-\uDFFF]+(?![\s\S])
  • customer_idstring (uuid)required

Resolve the customer by name/contact details with fieldtask_list_customers, or reuse data.id from fieldtask_create_customer. Do not ask the user to supply an ID.

  • namestringrequired
    1–256 characters
    Pattern^[^\u0000-\u001F-Ÿ\uD800-\uDFFF]+(?![\s\S])
  • latitudenumberoptional

Known latitude; supply together with longitude. Do not invent coordinates.

  • longitudenumberoptional

Known longitude; omit both coordinates to geocode the address asynchronously.

  • operation_keystringoptional
    16–128 characters
    Pattern ^[ -~]+(?![\s\S])
  • radiusintegeroptionaldefault 100

Geofence radius in metres. Defaults to 100 when omitted.

Additional properties are rejected.

Result

A successful call returns the location as structuredContent, with the operation details alongside it. The same JSON is also sent as text content for clients that only read text.

Default location and primary address

  • A customer's first location becomes its default (is_default: true). Later locations never change the default.
  • If the customer already has locations but none is marked as default, which can happen with older data, the call fails with validation_failed. Make one of the customer's locations the default in FieldTask, then retry.
  • A customer's first location also sets the customer's primary address, if it had none. If it already had a different one, that address is kept and the operation reports a blocked target with reconciliation_required. Later locations never change the primary address.

See The customer's primary address for the full rules.

Retries and operation_key

operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:

  • The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with replayed: true. No second location is created.
  • The same key with different arguments, including a different customer_id, fails with idempotency_key_reused.
  • A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different location, even after seven days.
  • Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it.
  • The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.

If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. If a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to list the customer's locations before trying again, rather than asking it to create the location again. Locations have no external_reference, so the name and address are the only way to recognize one.

Errors

When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent with code, message, fix, docs_url and request_id. Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds. See Create a job for an example.

error.codeMeaningWhat to do
missing_permissionThe connection lacks customer_locations:create, customer_locations:read or customers:read.Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools.
validation_failedAn argument is missing, unknown or invalid; only one coordinate was sent; the customer doesn't exist or was deleted; or the customer has locations but no default.Check the arguments against the field guide and look the customer up again. The error doesn't name the field.
api_access_not_enabledAPI and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization.Request access in Settings → API connections.
operation_forbiddenThe connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay would return data it can no longer read.Check the connection's permissions, then retry with the same operation_key.
idempotency_key_reusedThe operation_key was used with different arguments or a different customer.Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different location.
operation_in_progressA call with the same key is still running.Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key.
idempotency_window_expiredThe key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed.List the customer's locations before creating anything new.
resource_goneThe key was replayed, but the location it created, or its customer, has since been deleted.Don't create it again automatically. Check in FieldTask whether it was removed on purpose.
rate_limit_exceeded, daily_quota_exceededA per-minute, concurrency or daily limit was reached.Wait retry_after seconds.
resource_not_foundThe tool or a feature it needs isn't available.Refresh the client's tools; contact FieldTask if you expected it.
temporarily_unavailableFieldTask couldn't complete the call. The location may or may not exist.Retry with the same operation_key, or list the customer's locations first.

Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.

Recovery and follow-up work

Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs customer_locations:read and customers:read, and works only on the same connection.

The operation reports local_status:
the location exists regardless of anything else. integration.status covers follow-up work, which for a location can be:

  • A coordinate lookup, when you didn't give coordinates. It's pending while queued or being retried, succeeded once the coordinates are saved, blocked with configuration_required where FieldTask hasn't enabled lookups, and failed with invalid_upstream_data if the address couldn't be found. If the location is edited or deleted before the lookup finishes, it's blocked with reconciliation_required and nothing is overwritten.
  • A primary-address conflict, reported as blocked with reconciliation_required, as described above.
  • External synchronization of the customer's new primary address, reported as blocked with configuration_required where your organization has external customer synchronization turned on. This is pending confirmation for the release.

Targets don't say which kind of work they are. See What happens after the location is saved for details.

Operation results are kept for seven days.

Tool annotations

Tool annotations your client receives.
AnnotationValueMeaning
destructiveHintfalseNever modifies or removes existing records.
idempotentHintfalseEach new call can create another record. Reuse operation_key to retry safely.
openWorldHinttrueCan start work outside FieldTask, such as external synchronization.
readOnlyHintfalseChanges data in FieldTask.
