fieldtask_create_customer
Creates a record- Permissions
customers:create,customers:read- REST equivalent
POST /public/v1/customers- Safe retries
operation_key
fieldtask_create_customer lets an AI client connected to FieldTask through MCP create one customer. It accepts the same inputs as POST /public/v1/customers and runs the same checks, so a customer created here is identical to one created through REST.
The tool only creates. It never updates or merges with an existing customer, even one with the same name.
This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use.
Before you start
- MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
- An organization owner or admin to approve the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. The tool then acts on their behalf within the approved permissions.
- An AI client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. You add FieldTask's MCP server address to the client; the address is shown with your connection settings. MCP uses its own sign-in: REST API tokens and client secrets don't work here.
- Customer creation enabled through MCP. If
fieldtask_create_customerisn't in your client's tool list after connecting, MCP customer creation isn't enabled by FieldTask, or the connection lackscustomers:create.
Permissions
| Permission | Dependency in the permission map |
|---|---|
customers:create | Depends on customers:read |
customers:read | No dependencies |
No argument needs an additional permission.
Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools so it discovers the new inputs and tools.
Avoiding duplicate customers
FieldTask instructs the client to look for an existing customer with fieldtask_list_customers, following every page, before it creates one, and never to create a duplicate to avoid a lookup. These are instructions to the client, not guarantees, so check what was created.
The server does enforce one rule: an email address can belong to only one customer in your organization, including customers that were deleted in FieldTask. A second customer with an email address that's already in use is rejected with validation_failed, and nothing is created. Email addresses are compared exactly, including upper and lower case. See Email addresses.
Example prompts and their effects
The client's wording and the exact sequence of lookups vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.
| You ask | Tools the client typically calls | What you can verify |
|---|---|---|
| "Add a new customer called Example Property Services, email facilities@example.com, phone +1 555 555 0100." | fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_create_customer | The customer appears under Customers with that email and phone number. The result's data.id is the new customer's ID and replayed is false. |
| "Add Example Property Services as a customer, with their main office at 100 Example Avenue, Springfield." | fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_create_customer, fieldtask_create_customer_location | The customer has one location, Main office, which is its default. The customer's primary address is that address. |
| "Add Example Property Services" when a customer with that name already exists | fieldtask_list_customers | FieldTask instructs the client to avoid duplicates, so it typically points out the existing customer instead of creating one. If it went ahead, a second customer with the same name appears under Customers. |
| "Add a customer with the email facilities@example.com" when that email is already in use | fieldtask_list_customers, possibly fieldtask_create_customer | No new customer is created. If the client tried, the result is an error with validation_failed. |
If something looks wrong, open the customer in FieldTask, or ask the client to fetch it with fieldtask_get_customer using the returned data.id.
Arguments
These are the arguments for the first example above:
{
"name": "Example Property Services",
"email": "facilities@example.com",
"phone_number": "+15555550100",
"operation_key": "3c9d2e7a-5b14-4f8e-a6d1-0e7b9c2f4a58"
}
Only name is required. The arguments follow the same rules as the REST request body: for example, phone_number must be in international format with no spaces, such as +15555550100, and color is #RRGGBB. See the REST field guide. The only MCP-specific argument is operation_key.
You can't give the customer an address here. To add one, the client creates a location for the customer with fieldtask_create_customer_location.

Result
A successful call returns the customer as structuredContent, with the operation details alongside it. The same JSON is also sent as text content for clients that only read text.

Retries and operation_key
operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:
- The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with
replayed: true. No second customer is created. - The same key with different arguments fails with
idempotency_key_reused. - A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different customer, even after seven days.
- Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it.
- The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.
A replay returns the result as it was when the customer was created. Because the key is checked first, a retry with the same key never fails on the customer's own email address.
If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. If a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to check first, for example "is Example Property Services in FieldTask now?", rather than asking it to create the customer again.
Errors
When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent with code, message, fix, docs_url and request_id. Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds. See Create a job for an example.
error.code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
missing_permission | The connection lacks customers:create or customers:read. | Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools. |
validation_failed | An argument is missing, unknown or invalid, or the email address already belongs to another customer, possibly a deleted one. | Check the arguments against the field guide. The error doesn't name the field. |
api_access_not_enabled | API and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization. | Request access in Settings → API connections. |
operation_forbidden | The connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay would return data it can no longer read. | Check the connection's permissions, then retry with the same operation_key. |
external_reference_conflict | Another customer from this client application already uses the external_reference. | Find the existing customer instead of creating another. |
idempotency_key_reused | The operation_key was used with different arguments. | Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different customer. |
operation_in_progress | A call with the same key is still running. | Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key. |
idempotency_window_expired | The key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed. | Check whether the customer exists before creating anything new. |
resource_gone | The key was replayed, but the customer it created has since been deleted. | Don't create it again automatically. Check in FieldTask whether it was removed on purpose. |
rate_limit_exceeded, daily_quota_exceeded | A per-minute, concurrency or daily limit was reached. | Wait retry_after seconds. |
resource_not_found | The tool or a feature it needs isn't available. | Refresh the client's tools; contact FieldTask if you expected it. |
temporarily_unavailable | FieldTask couldn't complete the call. The customer may or may not exist. | Retry with the same operation_key, or check for the customer first. |
Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.
Recovery
Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs customers:read and works only on the same connection.
The operation reports local_status: "committed" and an integration.status for follow-up work. The customer exists regardless of that status.
In the review contract, customers created through MCP aren't sent to a connected CRM. If your organization has external customer synchronization turned on, the operation reports a blocked target with configuration_required. Otherwise integration.status is not_applicable.
Operation results are kept for seven days.
Tool annotations
| Annotation | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
destructiveHint | false | Never modifies or removes existing records. |
idempotentHint | false | Each new call can create another record. Reuse operation_key to retry safely. |
openWorldHint | true | Can start work outside FieldTask, such as external synchronization. |
readOnlyHint | false | Changes data in FieldTask. |
