fieldtask_create_product
Creates a record- Permissions
products:create,products:read- REST equivalent
POST /public/v1/products- Safe retries
operation_key
fieldtask_create_product lets an AI client connected to FieldTask through MCP add one product or service, with 1–20 one-time prices, to your organization's catalog. It accepts the same inputs as POST /public/v1/products and runs the same checks, so a product created here is identical to one created through REST.
You describe the product and its prices in plain language. The client turns them into arguments; no IDs are needed.
This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use.
Before you start
- MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
- An organization owner or admin to approve the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. The tool then acts on their behalf within the approved permissions.
- An AI client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. See Connect a client. REST API tokens and client secrets don't work here.
- Product creation enabled through MCP. If
fieldtask_create_productisn't in your client's tool list after connecting, FieldTask hasn't enabled product creation through MCP, or the connection lacksproducts:create.
Permissions
| Permission | Dependency in the permission map |
|---|---|
products:create | Depends on products:read |
products:read | No dependencies |
To check for an existing product first, the client uses fieldtask_list_products, which needs products:read, already part of this tool's permissions.
Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools so it discovers the new tool.
Example prompts and their effects
The client's wording and the exact sequence of calls vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.
| You ask | Tools the client typically calls | What you can verify |
|---|---|---|
| "Add a service called Condenser fan motor replacement to our catalog, with a Standard price of $185 and an After hours price of $260." | fieldtask_create_product, sometimes after fieldtask_list_products | A new service appears in your catalog. The result's data.id is the product ID and data.prices has two options, Standard 185.00 and After hours 260.00, each with its own id. |
| "Add Air filter, 20 x 25 x 1 as a product at $24.50 each." | fieldtask_create_product | A product with one price option, so it can be added to jobs without choosing a price. |
| "Create a monthly maintenance plan at $49 a month." | Varies | The tool only creates one-time prices. If a product is created anyway, every data.prices[].price_type is one_time, and no subscription or recurring job exists. |
| "Create Condenser fan motor replacement" when it already exists | fieldtask_create_product | FieldTask doesn't check names, so a second product with a new data.id is created. Ask the client to search first if you're not sure. |
If something looks wrong, ask the client to fetch the product with fieldtask_get_product using the returned data.id.
Arguments
These are the arguments for the first example above:
{
"name": "Condenser fan motor replacement",
"item_type": "service",
"description": "Remove and replace a failed condenser fan motor, including parts and labour.",
"prices": [
{ "name": "Standard", "amount": "185" },
{ "name": "After hours", "amount": "260.00" }
],
"operation_key": "3c9a51e2-7d4b-4f08-b6a2-0e5f1c8d7b34"
}
The arguments follow the same rules as the REST request body: names, item types, decimal-string amounts, the optional currency and the one-time-only price type. See the REST field guide. The only MCP-specific argument is operation_key.

Result
A successful call returns the product as structuredContent, with the operation details alongside it. The same JSON is also sent as text content for clients that only read text.

Prices are listed newest first, so they can come back in a different order from the arguments. Match them by name. The product is approved in your catalog immediately and can be added to jobs with fieldtask_create_job_item.

Retries and operation_key
operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:
- The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with
replayed: true. No second product is created. - The same key with different arguments fails with
idempotency_key_reused. - A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different product, even after seven days.
- Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it. A key from one connection means nothing on another.
- The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.
If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. If a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to check before trying again, for example "search the catalog for condenser fan motor", rather than asking it to create the product again. See Idempotency and recovery.
Errors
When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent with code, message, fix, docs_url and request_id. Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds. See Errors.
error.code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
missing_permission | The connection lacks products:create or products:read. | Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools. |
validation_failed | An argument is missing, unknown or invalid: an empty name, an unsupported item type, no prices or more than 20, an invalid amount or currency, or a non-one-time price. | Check the arguments against the field guide. The error doesn't name the field. |
api_access_not_enabled | API and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization. | Request access in Settings → API connections. |
operation_forbidden | The connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay would return data it can no longer read. | Check the connection's permissions, then retry with the same operation_key. |
idempotency_key_reused | The operation_key was used with different arguments. | Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different product. |
operation_in_progress | A call with the same key is still running. | Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key. |
idempotency_window_expired | The key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed. | Search the catalog before creating anything new. |
resource_gone | The product this key created has since been deleted or is no longer approved. | Don't create it again automatically. Check in FieldTask whether it was removed on purpose. |
rate_limit_exceeded, daily_quota_exceeded | A per-minute, concurrency or daily limit was reached. | Wait retry_after seconds. |
response_too_large | The created product is too large to return through MCP. Nothing was created. | Shorten the description or use fewer prices, or create the product through REST. Don't retry the same call unchanged. |
resource_not_found | The tool or a feature it needs isn't available. | Refresh the client's tools; contact FieldTask if you expected it. |
temporarily_unavailable | FieldTask couldn't complete the call. The product may or may not exist. | Retry with the same operation_key, or search the catalog first. |
Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.
Recovery and external synchronization
Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs products:read and works only on the same connection. Operation results are kept for seven days.
The operation reports local_status: "committed": the product exists and can be used. If your organization has a connected CRM set up to receive products, integration reports that external synchronization separately; otherwise it's not_applicable. Synchronization is attempted once, and an unconfirmed outcome is reported as outcome_unknown rather than retried. Check the connected CRM before asking the client to do anything that could duplicate the product. See Local creation and external synchronization.
Tool annotations
| Annotation | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
destructiveHint | false | Never modifies or removes existing records. |
idempotentHint | false | Each new call can create another record. Reuse operation_key to retry safely. |
openWorldHint | true | Can start work outside FieldTask, such as external synchronization. |
readOnlyHint | false | Changes data in FieldTask. |
