operation_key

fieldtask_create_job_item lets an AI client connected to FieldTask through MCP add one catalog product or service to an existing job, priced from the catalog. It accepts the same inputs as POST /public/v1/jobs/{job_id}/items and runs the same checks, so an item added here is identical to one added through REST.

You name the job, the product and, if it has several prices, the price to use. The client looks up the IDs with FieldTask's other tools, then calls this tool.

Preview

This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use.

Before you start

  • MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
  • An organization owner or admin to approve the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. The tool then acts on their behalf within the approved permissions.
  • An AI client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. See Connect a client. REST API tokens and client secrets don't work here.
  • Job items enabled through MCP. If fieldtask_create_job_item isn't in your client's tool list after connecting, FieldTask hasn't enabled adding job items through MCP, or the connection lacks job_items:create.
  • An existing job and an available catalog product. To add a product that isn't in the catalog yet, create it first with fieldtask_create_product.

Permissions

Permissions the connection must hold for the tool to appear and run.
PermissionDependency in the permission map
job_items:createDepends on job_items:read, jobs:read, products:read
job_items:readDepends on jobs:read
jobs:readNo dependencies
products:readNo dependencies

The lookup tools the client needs are covered by these permissions: fieldtask_list_jobs (jobs:read), fieldtask_list_products (products:read) and fieldtask_list_job_items (job_items:read).

Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools so it discovers the new tool.

How the client finds IDs and chooses a price

Every reference argument is an ID, but you never need to supply one.

ArgumentWhere the ID comes from
job_idfieldtask_list_jobs, matched by name or job number, or data.id from fieldtask_create_job
product_idfieldtask_list_products, searched by name, or data.id from fieldtask_create_product
price_id, price_sourceThe product's prices, as returned by fieldtask_list_products or fieldtask_get_product

FieldTask's tool descriptions tell the client to:

  • ask you to choose when a job or product name matches more than one record;
  • ask you to choose a price when the product has several options, keeping options with the same amount separate, and never pick one itself.

These are instructions to the client, not guarantees. The server, however, never chooses a price: if the arguments don't identify exactly one eligible price option, the call fails with validation_failed and nothing is added. The rules are in Choosing a price.

Example prompts and their effects

The client's wording and the exact sequence of lookups vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.

You askTools the client typically callsWhat you can verify
"Add a condenser fan motor replacement to the Replace condenser fan motor job."fieldtask_list_jobs, fieldtask_list_productsThe product has two prices, Standard 185.00 and After hours 260.00, so the client asks which to use. Nothing is added to the job until you answer.
"Use the standard price."fieldtask_create_job_itemThe job has a new item. The result's data.price_name is Standard, data.unit_price is 185.00 and data.amount is 185.0000. The job's job_value goes up by 185.00.
"Add 4 air filters to the same job."fieldtask_list_products, fieldtask_create_job_itemThe product has only one price, so the client doesn't need to ask. The item has quantity 4.00, unit_price 24.50 and amount 98.0000.
"Add the condenser fan motor at $150."Usually fieldtask_list_products onlyCustom prices aren't supported: an item's unit price is always one of the product's catalog prices. Expect the client to offer those instead.
"Did that get added? Check the items on the job."fieldtask_list_job_itemsThe new item is listed with the returned data.id.

If something looks wrong, open the job in FieldTask, or ask the client to fetch the item with fieldtask_get_job_item using the returned data.id and data.job_id.

Arguments

These are the arguments for the second example above, after you chose the Standard price:

fieldtask_create_job_item arguments
{
"job_id": "77777777-7777-4777-8777-777777777777",
"product_id": "44444444-4444-4444-8444-444444444444",
"price_id": "55555555-5555-4555-8555-555555555555",
"quantity": "1",
"operation_key": "c41e7b90-5a2d-4e6f-8b13-9d07a6f2e5c8"
}

The arguments follow the same rules as the REST request: the product must be approved and available, quantity is a decimal string defaulting to "1.00", and price_id or price_source must leave exactly one eligible price. See the REST field guide. The MCP-specific arguments are job_id, which REST takes from the URL, and operation_key.

Arguments for fieldtask_create_job_item. Descriptions are the text your AI client receives.

  • job_idstring (uuid)required

    Resolve the job by name or job number with fieldtask_list_jobs and use its returned ID.

  • product_idstring (uuid)required
  • operation_keystringoptional
    16–128 characters
    Pattern ^[\u0020-\u007E]+(?![\s\S])
  • price_idstring (uuid)optional

    Named price ID from products.prices. Required when more than one option is eligible.

  • price_source"price" | "legacy"optional

    Select legacy explicitly when using the legacy unit price.

  • quantitystringoptionaldefault "1.00"
    Pattern ^(0|[1-9][0-9]{0,7})(\.[0-9]{1,2})?$

Additional properties are rejected.

Result

A successful call returns the new item as structuredContent, with the operation details alongside it. The same JSON is also sent as text content for clients that only read text.

What the item means for the job:

  • Its name, description, type and unit price are copied from the catalog. Later catalog changes don't affect it, and it has no product or price ID.
  • It starts with status: "to do" and allow_evidences: false.
  • The job's job_value increases by amount. Quotes and invoices keep their own line items and don't change.
  • FieldTask doesn't check the job's status, so items can be added to completed or cancelled jobs. Ask the client to check the job first if that matters.

See What's saved on the job for details.

Retries and operation_key

operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:

  • The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with replayed: true. No second item is added.
  • The same key with different arguments, including a different job_id, fails with idempotency_key_reused.
  • A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different item, even after seven days.
  • Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it. A key from one connection means nothing on another.
  • The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.

If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. Job items have no external reference, so if a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to list the job's items before trying again, rather than asking it to add the item again. See Idempotency and recovery.

Errors

When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent with code, message, fix, docs_url and request_id. Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds. See Errors.

error.codeMeaningWhat to do
missing_permissionThe connection lacks job_items:create, job_items:read, jobs:read or products:read.Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools.
validation_failedAn argument is missing, unknown or invalid; the product isn't approved or available; or the price arguments don't identify exactly one eligible option.Read the product again and choose a price. The error doesn't name the field.
resource_not_foundThe job doesn't exist in your organization or has been deleted, or the tool or a feature it needs isn't available.Look the job up again with fieldtask_list_jobs; refresh the client's tools if the tool is missing.
api_access_not_enabledAPI and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization.Request access in Settings → API connections.
operation_forbiddenThe connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay would return data it can no longer read.Check the connection's permissions, then retry with the same operation_key.
idempotency_key_reusedThe operation_key was used with different arguments or a different job.Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different item.
operation_in_progressA call with the same key is still running.Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key.
idempotency_window_expiredThe key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed.List the job's items before adding anything new.
resource_goneThe item this key added, or its job, has since been deleted.Don't add it again automatically. Check in FieldTask whether it was removed on purpose.
rate_limit_exceeded, daily_quota_exceededA per-minute, concurrency or daily limit was reached.Wait retry_after seconds.
response_too_largeThe new item is too large to return through MCP. Nothing was added.Add the item through REST. Don't retry the same call unchanged.
temporarily_unavailableFieldTask couldn't complete the call. The item may or may not have been added.Retry with the same operation_key, or list the job's items first.

Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.

Recovery

Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs job_items:read and jobs:read and works only on the same connection. Operation results are kept for seven days.

The operation reports local_status: "committed". Adding a job item queues no follow-up work, so integration.status is always not_applicable.

Tool annotations

Tool annotations your client receives.
AnnotationValueMeaning
destructiveHintfalseNever modifies or removes existing records.
idempotentHintfalseEach new call can create another record. Reuse operation_key to retry safely.
openWorldHinttrueCan start work outside FieldTask, such as external synchronization.
readOnlyHintfalseChanges data in FieldTask.
