fieldtask_create_job lets an AI client connected to FieldTask through MCP create one field job for an existing customer. It accepts the same inputs as POST /public/v1/jobs and runs the same checks, so a job created here is identical to one created through REST.

You describe the job in plain language. The client looks up the customer, location and people with FieldTask's other tools, then calls this tool with their IDs.

Preview

This page is generated from contract 2026-11-03-review.2, a review export that hasn't been released. Your client's discovered tool list is the authority for what your connection can use.

Before you start

  • MCP access for your organization. FieldTask enables API and MCP access per organization. An owner or admin requests it in Settings → API connections.
  • An organization owner or admin to approve the connection. When the client connects, that person signs in to FieldTask, chooses the organization and permissions, and approves. The tool then acts on their behalf within the approved permissions.
  • An AI client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. You add FieldTask's MCP server address to the client; the address is shown with your connection settings. MCP uses its own sign-in: REST API tokens and client secrets don't work here.
  • Job creation enabled through MCP. If fieldtask_create_job isn't in your client's tool list after connecting, MCP job creation isn't enabled by FieldTask, or the connection lacks jobs:create.

Some optional inputs need features that FieldTask enables separately: timed scheduling, initial assignment and job items.

Permissions

Permissions the connection must hold for the tool to appear and run.
PermissionDependency in the permission map
customers:readNo dependencies

location_id is not nullcustomer_locations:readcustomer_locations:read, customers:read

To resolve names into IDs, the client also needs read access for the lookup tools it uses: fieldtask_list_customers (customers:read), fieldtask_list_customer_locations (customer_locations:read), fieldtask_list_members (members:read) and fieldtask_list_products (products:read).

Changing permissions. An owner or admin can reduce an MCP connection's permissions or revoke it in Settings → API connections; removals apply to the next tool call. Added permissions stay pending until the person who connected the client signs in and approves again. Then refresh the client's tools so it discovers the new inputs and tools.

How the client finds IDs

Every reference argument is an ID, but you never need to supply one. FieldTask's tool descriptions tell the client how to resolve them.

  1. Customerfieldtask_list_customersMatches the name or contact details you gave.
  2. Job sitefieldtask_list_customer_locationsPicks a saved location, or asks for the address and creates one.
  3. Peoplefieldtask_list_membersFinds member IDs by display name.
  4. Createfieldtask_create_jobSends the IDs, the schedule and an operation_key.

Where each ID comes from:

ArgumentWhere the ID comes from
customer_idfieldtask_list_customers, matched by name or contact details, or data.id from fieldtask_create_customer
location_idfieldtask_list_customer_locations for the chosen customer, matched by name or address, or data.id from fieldtask_create_customer_location
assignee_member_idsfieldtask_list_members, matched by display name. These are member IDs, not user IDs.
items[].product_id, items[].price_idfieldtask_list_products

The server also instructs the client to:

  • ask you to choose when a name matches more than one record, using readable details rather than IDs;
  • follow list pages before concluding a record doesn't exist, and never invent an ID or create a duplicate to avoid a lookup;
  • if the customer has no saved location, ask for the job site address, create the location (radius 100 metres unless you say otherwise) and use it, unless you explicitly choose to go without one;
  • explain a missing permission instead of treating it as "no results".

These are instructions to the client, not guarantees. Check what was created, as described below.

Example prompts and their effects

The client's wording and the exact sequence of lookups vary by client and model. What you can rely on is the effect in FieldTask and the identifiers in the tool result.

You askTools the client typically callsWhat you can verify
"Create an unscheduled job called Inspect rooftop unit for Example Property Services."fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_list_customer_locations, fieldtask_create_jobA new unscheduled job for that customer appears under Jobs. The result's data.status is unscheduled and data.id is the new job's ID.
"Schedule Replace condenser fan motor for Example Property Services at their Main office on 10 November, 9:00–11:30 New York time, and assign Alex."fieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_list_customer_locations, fieldtask_list_members, fieldtask_create_jobThe job is scheduled at the Main office, 14:00–16:30 UTC (shown in your local time in the app), assigned to Alex.
"Create a job for Example Property Services" when the customer has no saved locationfieldtask_list_customers, fieldtask_list_customer_locationsThe client asks for the site address before creating anything.
"Did that job get created? Check the operation."fieldtask_get_operationThe result shows local_status: "committed" and the follow-up integration.status.

If something looks wrong, open the job in FieldTask, or ask the client to fetch it with fieldtask_get_job using the returned data.id.

Arguments

These are the arguments for the unscheduled example above, as the client sends them after looking up the customer:

fieldtask_create_job arguments
{
"name": "Inspect rooftop unit",
"customer_id": "11111111-1111-4111-8111-111111111111",

"operation_key": "8f1b6c1e-2f43-4d0a-9a51-3c7e2d9b4a10"
}

The arguments follow the same rules as the REST request body. For scheduling, time zones, assignees, line items and external references, see the REST field guide. The only MCP-specific argument is operation_key.

Retries and operation_key

operation_key makes a create safe to retry. It works like REST's Idempotency-Key:

  • The same key with the same arguments within seven days returns the original result with replayed: true. No second job is created.
  • The same key with different arguments fails with idempotency_key_reused.
  • A key is 16–128 printable ASCII characters and can never be reused for a different job, even after seven days.
  • Keys are scoped to the organization, the MCP connection and the person who approved it. A key from one connection means nothing on another.
  • The JSON-RPC request ID isn't an operation key.

If the client doesn't send operation_key, the server generates one and returns it in the result. That protects retries only if the client receives the result. If a call times out or the client is unsure whether it succeeded, ask it to check before trying again, for example "list today's jobs for Example Property Services" or "check the operation for that job", rather than asking it to create the job again.

Errors

When a call fails, the result has isError: true and an error object in structuredContent:

Tool error result (structuredContent)
{
"error": {
"code": "missing_permission",
"message": "This token doesn't have members:read.",
"fix": "Edit the token's permissions in Settings → API connections.",
"docs_url": "https://api.fieldtask.example/public/docs/",
"request_id": "99999999-9999-4999-8999-999999999994"
}
}

Errors that ask you to wait also include retry_after in seconds.

error.codeMeaningWhat to do
missing_permissionThe connection lacks a permission for this call or one of its arguments.Add it in Settings → API connections, approve it in the client's sign-in, then refresh the client's tools.
validation_failedAn argument is missing, unknown or invalid, a referenced record isn't eligible, or an input needs a feature that isn't enabled.Check the arguments against the field guide. The error doesn't name the field.
api_access_not_enabledAPI and MCP access isn't enabled for this organization.Request access in Settings → API connections.
operation_forbiddenThe connection's access changed while the call ran, or a replay would return data it can no longer read.Check the connection's permissions, then retry with the same operation_key.
external_reference_conflictAnother job from this client application already uses the external_reference.Find the existing job instead of creating another.
idempotency_key_reusedThe operation_key was used with different arguments.Retry with the original arguments, or use a new key for a different job.
operation_in_progressA call with the same key is still running.Wait retry_after seconds and retry with the same key.
idempotency_window_expiredThe key is more than seven days old. This doesn't mean the original call failed.Check whether the job exists before creating anything new.
rate_limit_exceeded, daily_quota_exceededA per-minute, concurrency or daily limit was reached.Wait retry_after seconds.
response_too_largeThe created job, with its line items, is too large to return through MCP. Nothing was created.Send fewer items, or create the job through REST. Don't retry the same call unchanged.
resource_not_foundThe tool or a feature it needs isn't available.Refresh the client's tools; contact FieldTask if you expected it.
temporarily_unavailableFieldTask couldn't complete the call. The job may or may not exist.Retry with the same operation_key, or check for the job first.

Problems with the connection itself, such as an expired sign-in, are reported by the MCP transport rather than as a tool result. The client then asks you to sign in again.

Recovery

Every successful result includes operation_id. To check a create later, the client calls fieldtask_get_operation with id set to that value. It needs jobs:read and works only on the same connection.

The operation reports local_status: "committed" and an integration.status for follow-up work, such as geocoding a location or synchronization with a connected system. The job exists regardless of that status. See Local creation and external synchronization for the status values.

Operation results are kept for seven days.
